Inhaftierte Personen sind eine oft vergessene Bevölkerungsgruppe. Viele betrachten sie als getrennt vom Rest der Gesellschaft, entfernt als Strafmaßnahme oder in Untersuchungshaft. Aber inhaftierte Personen sind ein Produkt unserer Gesellschaft und bleiben ein Teil davon. Die überwiegende Mehrheit der von inhaftierten Personen wird freigelassen und muss die Möglichkeit für gesellschaftliche Integration erhalten.
Was Menschen im Laufe ihrer Inhaftierung widerfährt, betrifft uns alle in vielerlei Hinsicht: öffentliche Sicherheit, unsere Gesundheit, die Finanzen unserer Gemeinschaft, den sozialen Zusammenhalt und letztendlich unsere Menschenwürde. Wenn wir den Umfang der Inhaftierung verringern, die Haftbedingungen verbessern und die Chancen auf soziale (Re-)Integration erhöhen, geht es uns allen besser. Nehmt am 18. Prisoners are an often forgotten population. Many think about them as separate from the rest of society, removed as a criminal punishment or pending trial. But prisoners are a product of and remain part of our societies, and the vast majority of prisoners will eventually be released. What happens to people in the course of imprisonment affects all of us in many ways: public safety, our health, our community’s finances, social cohesion, and ultimately the human dignity of us all.
When we reduce the scope of imprisonment, improve prison conditions and enhance social reintegration prospects, we are all better off. Prisoners matter.
