During her Sociology studies, Anja Gernert developed a deep interest in health promotion in correctional facilities and its impact on (re)integration opportunities. 🏥💡 Her passion for this topic led her to explore ways to improve vocational training and support incarcerated people on their journey back into society.
At Richtungswechsel – AT she’s committed to turning theory into action, helping reshape the public perception of the justice system and advocating for better prison conditions. 💙 For Anja Gernert (re)integration isn’t just an individual process – it’s something that affects us ALL! ✨

Kicking off the #resize project in Timișoara 🇷🇴
Last week, Richtungswechsel 🇦🇹had the privilege of participating in the first transnational #resize partnership meeting, where all 24 organizations came together to collaborate, strategize, and drive innovation in correctional education and professional development. Over the course of two days, we laid the foundation for the next four years, focusing on enhancing the competencies of current and future correctional professionals under the LiberateSkills Pact – a Lifelong Learning European Pact for Correctional Excellence.
A huge thank you to CPIP 🇷🇴for hosting and organizing this important event! It was incredibly valuable to meet all partners in person, exchange insights, and align our shared vision for the future. We are excited for the journey ahead and look forward to making a real impact together! 🚀✨

🔹 Over 16 years of experience working within English prisons.
🔹 A specialist in therapeutic correctional relationships.
🔹 Her doctoral research focused on the importance of humanistic principles in prison practices.
🔹 Passionate about transforming the prison system and driving meaningful change.
🌍 What will she talk about?
Dr. Lewis will share international perspectives on the collaboration between Third Sector Organisations (TSOs) and prison services. She will highlight how these partnerships can support prison reform and foster more effective and humane approaches in the justice sector.

🇷🇴 Visit at the Penitenciarul Timișoara 🇷🇴
The Timișoara Penitentiary is the coordinating correctional facility in Romania’s western region. With multiple locations, including external units and farms, it focuses on diverse integration programs.
Thanks to Camelia-Giorgiana Blaga, Eva Corn from Richtungswechsel – AT had the opportunity to visit and learn more:
➡️In the main facility, incarcerated people create their own TV and radio programs and engage in creative activities like painting.
➡️Another facility, a converted hostel, houses up to 50 people who have the chance to work in a nearby factory.
➡️The most inspiring part for me was visiting the farms, where incarcerated people live and take care of their animals and produce their own food, such as honey cheese and meat – an important step towards independence 💪
It was amazing to see how education, work, and creativity pave the way for a better future! ⚡️
