To understand the importance of social (re)integration we have to first realize that prisons do not exist in a vacuum, they are an integral part of wider society🌍. Public opinion and discourse is therefore an integral part in an effective justice system. How we communicate💬 around incarcerated can shape their ability to (re)integrate into society🤝.
Richtungswechsel works from both directions 🔄 to encourage social (re)integration by both encouraging initiatives for incarcerated individuals and to spread awareness📣 in the wider society of how we can all aid the (re) integration of formerly incarcerated individuals!

Momina ist unser neues Mitglied im Richtungswechsel-Team und unterstützt uns als engagierte Volontärin. 🙌✨ Sie ist Anwältin aus Pakistan und derzeit im Erasmus-Mundus-Masterprogramm „Geschichte im öffentlichen Raum“ eingeschrieben.
Ihre Hauptinteressen liegen in politischen Ansätzen zur Bekämpfung von geschlechtsspezifischer Gewalt und der Entwicklung von Sensibilisierungstrainings für Fachkräfte. Für ihre Abschlussarbeit entwickelt sie einen interaktiven Workshop, der das Bewusstsein für häusliche Gewalt in Punjab, Pakistan, stärken soll. 💡🌍

Her main interests focus on political approaches to combat gender-based violence and developing awareness training for professionals. For her thesis, she is creating an interactive workshop to raise awareness about domestic violence in Punjab, Pakistan. 💡🌍

Ein spannender Tag voller Einblicke in die Forschung und Diskussionen über innovative Ansätze im Justiz- und Maßnahmenvollzug. 👥🤝

🏆 Outstanding research projects on topics such as:

– 🏥 Recruiting healthcare staff in FTZ Asten.
– 💊 Addressing new psychoactive substances in correctional facilities.

Österreich hatte lange Zeit eines der strengsten Verbote für das Wahlrecht von Inhaftierten in der EU, wurde jedoch aufgrund einer Entscheidung des Europäischen Gerichtshofs gezwungen, seine Gesetzgebung zu lockern. Dennoch bestehen weiterhin erhebliche Einschränkungen beim Wahlrecht von Inhaftierten🗳️. Ein österreichisches Strafgericht kann das Wahlrecht von Personen entziehen, die entweder zu über fünf Jahren Haft für ein vorsätzliches Verbrechen oder zu über einem Jahr für bestimmte Verbrechen wie Hochverrat, Wahlbetrug und Terrorismus verurteilt wurden.
Der Verlust des Wahlrechts für Gefangene kann zu sozialer und politischer Entfremdung führen, was nach der Haftstrafe ein Hindernis für die soziale (Re-)Integration darstellen kann👥. Der Entzug des Wahlrechts von Gefangenen wurde auch als ein Zustand der „bürgerlichen Todesstrafe“ beschrieben, den der Europäische Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte als unangemessen in einer modernen Gesellschaft betrachtet.

For a long time Austria had one of the harshest bans on incarcerated peoples right to vote in the EU, but was forced to soften their legislation due to a decision made by the European Court. Still major limitations remain for incarcerated individuals right to vote🗳️. An Austrian Criminal court can remove the right to vote for individuals who have either been sentenced to prison for over five years for an intentional crime, or been sentenced to over one year for certain crimes including treason, electoral fraud and terrorism.
The loss of the right to vote for prisoners can lead to social and political alienation which can become a barrier for social (re)integration after a sentence👥. Disenfranchisement of prisoners has also been described as incarcerated people living in a status of “civil death” which the European Court of Human Rights has stated in inappropriate in a modern society.

In Europe, 1.5 million people are in prison seperated from society while expected to prepare for their return. This paradoxical approach—separating people to reintegrate them—has persisted for over 200 years, despite its ineffectiveness. 🚫🕰️ RESCALED is challenging this outdated concept. 💡✨
Instead of traditional prisons, RESCALED advocates for detention houses: small-scale 🏡, differentiated 🛠️, and community-integrated 🤝 facilities. These modern alternatives contribute to safer, more inclusive societies 🌍💚 by keeping individuals connected to their communities.
Excitingly, the UN Human Rights Council adopted Resolution 57/9 on October 9, 2024, urging states to prioritize social reintegration. 🌟 The resolution supports non-custodial measures ✅ and small-scale detention 🏠, emphasizing community-based solutions for successful re-entry into society. 🎯
